The Common Causes of TMJ Disorders
- Arthritis: Just like other joints in your body, your TMJ can fall prey to different types of arthritis, such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, leading to discomfort and dysfunction.
- Jaw Injury: A heavy blow or whiplash can damage the joint, leading to TMJ dysfunction.
- Grinding or Clenching Teeth (Bruxism): Habitual grinding or clenching puts pressure on the TMJ, which can cause dysfunction over time.
In addition, habitual slouching or neck straining can put undue stress on the TMJ. For some, chronic jaw clenching or limited mobility can lead to problems with the TMJ. Regardless of your underlying issues, our physical therapists can help correct them with targeted treatments.

From your first visit, our team of physical therapists undertakes a comprehensive evaluation process unique to your needs. We start by diving into your medical history, unearthing vital information that could impact your treatment plan. Your previous medical experiences, conditions, and treatments offer valuable insights into tailoring your treatment for optimum effectiveness.
We then proceed to specialized testing. Our experts meticulously assess your physical conditions, applying a variety of assessments that include movement and strength tests, as well as pain and stiffness measures.
In our treatment for TMJ dysfunction, we utilize:
- Manual Therapy: Manual therapy involves a hands-on approach where physical therapists use their hands to apply pressure to muscle tissue and manipulate joints. It can help to decrease pain, increase range of motion, and reduce muscle tension in patients with TMJ dysfunction.
- Therapeutic Exercises: Specific exercises can be prescribed to strengthen the muscles around the jaw and improve joint mobility. This could include stretching, strengthening, or a combination of both.
- Patient Education: Educating patients about their condition is critical to TMJ treatment. Physical therapists can provide information on posture correction, jaw movement, stress management techniques, and diet adjustments that can alleviate symptoms.
- Relaxation Techniques: Techniques such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and guided imagery can help manage the stress often associated with TMJ pain. Stress management is essential because tension can contribute to clenching and grinding, exacerbating TMJ symptoms.
- Dry Needling: Dry needling is a specialized technique used to relieve muscle tension and reduce pain associated with TMJ dysfunction. By targeting trigger points in the muscles of the jaw, face, neck, and upper shoulders, dry needling can help decrease muscle tightness, improve jaw mobility, and restore normal muscle function. When combined with manual therapy and therapeutic exercises, dry needling can be an effective treatment option for reducing pain, improving function, and helping patients return to their daily activities with greater comfort.
